Characteristics of maxillofacial trauma sequelae through forensic medicine assessment at the Vietnam national institute of forensic medicine

Abstract: We studied the characteristics of 125 cases of maxillofacial trauma that were assessed to determine the percentage of health impairment at the National Institute of Forensic Medicine, Vietnam. The results showed that: the proportion of men was 79.2%, women were 20.8%; the age group of 31-45 had the highest rate of 45%, 16-30 (22.4%), 46-60 (20%), > 60 (11%), the lowest was the group ≤ 15 years old, accounting for only 1.6%; the causes due to violence accounted for the highest rate of 65.6%, traffic accidents 33.6%, and work accidents had the lowest rate of 0.8%. The sequelae of maxillofacial trauma detected during examination showed that bone fracture accounted for the highest percentage of 77%, soft tissue scars 65.6%, sinus damage 48%, teeth damage 27%, peripheral VII nerve and other nerves 4%, mucosal scars 1.6%, salivary glands 0.8%, combined damage 9.6%; There were 30.4% tooth damage, such as broken and chipped teeth; Fractures of the zygomatic arch and adjacent arch accounted for the highest percentage of 49.6%, combined damage 38.4%; sinus fracture 31.2%, maxillary fracture 17.5%, mandibular fracture 8%, fracture of both maxillary and mandibular bones 3.2%, broken tooth socket 2.4%. The injury caused by blunt objects accounted for the highest percentage of 72%, by sharp objects 6.4% and by unidentified objects was 21.6%.
